    It might be day camp, but it is time to explore the night! Children will investigate the In the Dark exhibition at the Flint Hills Discovery Center and discover which animals come out at night. They’ll learn how animals use different senses to travel around during the night, play nocturnal animal bingo and create an owl puppet to take home! * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year. The age of the child attending determines the camp location when offered at both sites. Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. each session in which they are enrolled. Pick up for half-day registration is between 12:00 p.m. and 12:15 p.m., and pick up for full-day registration is between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Day registrants must bring their own sack lunch.

  3. Walk at Lunch Challenge Kick Off

    Walk at Lunch Challenge Kick Off, 12:10 PM, City Park Flag Plaza, The first 150 walkers get a free souvenir water bottle. Participants are challenged to walk Clarenberg Trail which is 1.1 miles two to three times per week on on their lunch hour in July. We celebrate Park and Recreation Month in July to promote the importance of parks and recreation in health and wellness, conservation and social equity. This month encourages citizens to reflect on the exponential value parks and recreation programming bring to this community.

  4. Adventure Camp: Chugga Choo Science

    July 2, 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    All aboard! It’s time to explore the history and science behind trains. Children will get to experience what it is like to pull a load just like a train by experimenting with weights and inclines. Day campers will learn the parts of a train using food and create their very own engineer hat to take home. You will not want to miss this exciting adventure! * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year.   7. Share the Story

    Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown Throughout the story, children will encounter animals they typically see in and around barns on a farm. After the story is read, children will be invited to make the art project of the month, Foam Farm Scene. Share the Story connects the youngest residents of the Flint Hills region to their homes and towns through storytelling that will develop a foundational appreciation for the rich culture.

    Ever wonder how pioneers did many of their tasks without electricity? Come join the FHDC and gain hands on practice with pioneer skills! We’ll make ropes, containers and a loom. Day campers will also assist with the construction of a rope bridge. Day campers will build a levitated train using magnets, plan and create their own railroad route through the U.S. using a map and make their own soda can steam engine to take home. * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year.   19. Adventure Camp: A STEM Investigation

    Come join us at the Flint Hills Discovery Center for a day of unsolved mystery! Students will research and decipher a case concerning a contaminated waterway. We will explore different ways to examine evidence, using chemical, photographic and biological means to study our evidence and draw conclusions. We will also learn about our local court process, participate in a mock trial and tour our county courthouse. * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year.   36. Primitive Skills Workshop II

    July 18, 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ This field course is located off-site in the Flint Hills so come prepared to spend a day in the field.

    Participants will gain hands on experience with primitive living skills associated with long term situations. This workshop explores ancestral nature-based living, food procurement, materials construction and shelters. Participants will have ample opportunity to apply techniques during the course that are unique to the prairie environment. Completion of Primitive Skills Workshop I is recommended but not required. Additional workshops are available on Saturday, June 20 and Saturday, August 15. Instructor Daniel Schapaugh is an Education Specialist at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. In the last 20 years, he has taught a variety of outdoor skills workshops and credit courses through K-State Global Campus, KDWPT, BSA and UFM.

Public sign-in for those wanting to choose furniture starts at 8 a.m. The sign-in will allow residents to choose what time to come back to pick up furniture.     Sneak on over to the Flint Hills Discovery Center to learn what people and animals use to hide. Children will explore the outdoors to look for animals who are hiding, discover what soldiers use to camouflage themselves while out in the field and use paint, leaves, grass and dirt to create a camouflage artistic painting to hide in their house! * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year.     Come explore our official state symbols of Kansas with hands on activities you get to take home. Children will get to create and pot their very own live sunflower, as well as a Little Bluestem craft that changes with the seasons! * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year.
