  9. Share the Story, Owls, by Gail Gibbons

    September 4, 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    Celebrate our exhibition, In the Dark, one last time with this story. Children will be invited to participate in the art project of the month, creating their very own owl mask! Share the Story connects the youngest residents of the Flint Hills region to their homes and towns through storytelling that will develop a foundational appreciation for the rich culture. Pre-registration is not required.

  13. Go See It! lecture: Photographing Dark Kansas Skies

    September 17, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    Photographer Scott Bean will help you get started photographing the night sky! This lecture will provide tips on how to edit your night sky photos as well as provide resources to finding the Milky Way, how to set your camera to record the most stars and go over the basic equipment needed to achieve the best photo! Free and open to the public.

  14. Flint Hills Masters Lunch & Lecture with Matthew Richter and Jay Nelson

    Join Flint Hills Master Artist Matthew Richter and Strecker-Nelson Gallery owner and exhibition curator Jay Nelson for this inaugural event. Enjoy a catered lunch as Matthew Richter demonstrates his mastery of landscapes during a live painting demo on the terrace of the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Following lunch, exhibition curator Jay Nelson will preview the upcoming Flint Hills Masters exhibition through a guided lecture. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness an artist practicing their craft in person and learn about the Flint Hills school of art from a veteran of the art world. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

  15. A Walk through the Native Prairie with Matthew Richter

    September 19, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    Experience the beauty of the native tallgrass prairie with Flint Hills Master Artist Matthew Richter as your guide. Hike through the rolling hills of the Konza Prairie as your guide provides artistic insight into the flora and fauna set out before you. Learn about the prairie ecosystem from an expert guide who translates these stunning landscapes onto canvas. Matthew Richter is a featured artist in the Flint Hills Masters exhibition and a member of the Kansas Native Plants Society. Meet at the Konza Prairie Biological Station Nature Trail kiosk. Pre-registration is required and space is limited so sign up today!

  16. Preschoolers in the Flint Hills

    Preschoolers will explore how to create pictures using different letters and play a game with race cars to identify the different letters.

  17. Adventure Camp: Native Americans Art, grades K-2

    September 25, 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    Enjoy a day exploring Native American Art at FHDC!! Children will make parfleche, bead work and pottery to take home. They’ll also have the chance to investigate the art behind various Native dwellings and the American Bison!! * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year. The age of the child attending determines the camp location when offered at both sites. Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. each session in which they are enrolled. Pick up for half-day registration is between 12:00 p.m. and 12:15 p.m., and pick up for full-day registration is between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Day registrants must bring their own sack lunch.
