Emergency Services

Fire Suppression
Fire continues to be one of the most costly public safety problems in the United States today. It is the basic mission of the Fire Department to protect the lives and property of Manhattan residents from the destructiveness of fire and explosions. The Manhattan Fire Department has an Automatic Assistance Response Zone to respond to emergencies outside city limits.

Rescue
Rescue services include extrication of victims of automobile accidents; high angle rescue of victims from above ground locations; and other rescue situations, which could include trench rescues or removal from collapsed structures.

Aircraft Fire Rescue
The Department also provides services dealing with aircraft emergencies at Manhattan Regional Airport and elsewhere throughout the area. The Department responds to notification of any emergency at the airport and also provides stand-by service for charter flights and medical helicopters transporting patients to and from local hospitals.

Hazardous Materials
The Department provides education and training to Fire Department personnel and residents throughout the community and surrounding areas.

Training
Along with a standard 240 hours of annual training, the Department hosts state and regional fire schools. These schools and other training events are open to all fire departments in the region. Instructors from a number of state and national organizations present classes at these training sessions.

Reporting Emergencies
All emergencies within the City of Manhattan, Riley County and Pottawatomie County should be reported by calling 9-1-1. This number may be used to notify authorities of fire, police and medical emergencies. The 9-1-1 dispatcher can dispatch the appropriate response agencies.

When calling 9-1-1, be prepared to give the following information:
  • The address/location of the emergency
  • Type of situation - fire, police or medical
  • For fires, provide type (house fire, smell of smoke, car, grass fire, etc.)
  • Report if there is anyone inside of the building, and if the fire is threatening any structure
  • Your name, address and a phone number where you can be reached in case more information is needed
Do not call from the inside of a burning structure - LEAVE IMMEDIATELY and call from the nearest phone available. Do not hang up until the dispatcher does.
