Safe Routes to School, Phase 2

Project Description

The first phase of the Safe Routes to School program developed plans to add infrastructure in areas surrounding Manhattan's eight elementary schools. The second phase implements the program as funding allows. The first group of projects funded include:
  • Adding sidewalks and crosswalks on Wreath Avenue
  • Adding sidewalk on 14th Street
  • Crosswalk enhancements on Lee Street and College Heights
  • Adding sidewalk on Gross Street
  • Adding sidewalk with flashing beacons on Casement Road


The Kansas Department of Transportation awarded a Transportation Alternatives (TA) grant for this project. Total construction cost is estimated at $269,147. The city's share is $100,202 likely to be paid from the Special Street and Highway Fund.
