Big Blue and Kansas Rivers Floodplain Management Plan

The Big Blue and Kansas Rivers Floodplain Management Plan is a summary of efforts and products of the Big Blue River Project.

This project was led by the City of Manhattan, Pottawatomie County and Riley County administrations and was supported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Kansas Hazard Mitigation Team to provide guidance for managing and reducing flood hazards along the Big Blue and Kansas Rivers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provided technical support in developing the floodplain management plan and leadership in reaching out to citizens and business owners at risk of flooding from the Big Blue and Kansas Rivers and their tributaries.

The City Commission approved Ordinance No. 7270 on January 3, 2017, to adopt the Big Blue and Kansas Rivers Floodplain Management Plan and amended the Manhattan Urban Area Comprehensive Plan to reference the document.  The Floodplain Management Plan will also be considered by applicable boards and commissions in Riley and Pottawatomie counties for adoption.
