Gary started with the city in March 1999 and has served as Communications Manager since November 2000. He was promoted to his present position as City Clerk/Communications Manager in February 2001. Prior to coming to Manhattan, Gary served as Marketing and Business Manager for Better Homes and Gardens Features in Des Moines, Iowa. Prior to that, he held several positions during his tenure with the Omaha World-Herald Company, including Advertising Director at the Huron Plainsman, Huron, S.D., and Assistant Advertising Manager, Marketing Coordinator and Classified Advertising Manager during his tenure with the Kearney Hub, Kearney, Neb.

Gary is a member of the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association of Kansas and past member of the board of directors serving two terms, a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, served on the board of directors for United Way of Riley County, and a graduate of the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program.
Gary has a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he graduated with honors in 1993. He received his Certified Municipal Clerk designation in 2003 and earned his Master Municipal Clerk professional designation in 2008 from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Association.
Gary’s wife, Bronwyn, is an associate professor at Kansas State University. They have two sons, Isaac and Alex.
