(MANHATTAN, KS – September 6, 2018) Friday, September 7 from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, a Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) will be open at St. Thomas Moore Church, located at 2900 Kimball Avenue. People affected by flooding can stop by throughout the day to meet with area support agencies. Tetanus boosters will be available from Riley County Health Department, replacement document applications will be available at no charge from the Riley County Treasurer, and many other services will be available. Food for the event will be provided by Dillons and Harvesters. Agencies at the MARC will include:
- American Red Cross
- Riley County Health Department
- Knights of Columbus
- DMV
- Catholic Charities
- Salvation Army
- Health Department
- Riley County Treasurer (to replace documents)
- Kansas Legal Services
- City of Manhattan
City staff will also be speaking with flood victims at the MARC to assess needs and help connect them with additional resources and volunteer support. To volunteer your time or to find out more information about assistance, please contact the City Manager’s Office at the event or by phone during regular business hours at 785-587-2404.
Donations of clothing and goods are not being accepted at this time. Instead, the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation has established a fund to help those affected by the flood. People who wish to donate to help flood victims can do so online at http://www.mcfks.org/flood or by texting “FLOOD” to 785-284-8783.
Many displaced apartment residents are moving out of the American Red Cross shelter and relocating to hotels in Junction City. Apartment owners are providing support to fund that move. The shelter at Pottorf Hall is expecting to close on Friday unless additional people need shelter.
Damage assessments to area properties have been completed and staff are inputting data into the FEMA model to calculate a total.
The Public Works department is continuing to assess damages to the Scenic Drive/Anderson bridge. The bridge is safe for travel but will require repairs as some erosion and scouring occurred during the flood.
All soft-surfaced trails, including Linear Trail, and all grass sports practice fields in area parks remain closed at this time. Some areas of Anneberg Park have reopened for scheduled practices and games, but parking is restricted to paved areas and hard-surfaced roads. The playground at Anneberg park was damaged during high water and will remain closed until repairs can be completed.
