[ARCHIVED] Manhattan Firefighter to Volunteer at Burn Camp

The Manhattan Fire Department has a firefighter serving as a camp counselor at the Burns Recovered Support Group Inc. in St. Louis this week. Fire Driver Gregg Van De Creek, known on social media as MFD’s Twitter Firefighter, is getting insight into the daily struggles burn survivors are forced to deal with.

“My interest started when I went to a Muscular Dystrophy Association camp and saw how much the camp meant to the kids,” said Van De Creek. “I realized when I was younger there should be somebody helping out and doing these kinds of things for people, then I realized after growing up, I guess I am that somebody.” FD Van De Creek will be tweeting about his experiences this week on Twitter @ManhattanFD with the hashtag “#MCBC.”

If you know someone who is between the ages of 6 and 17 who has been severely burned and hospitalized and is a resident of either Kansas or Missouri, more information about the Missouri Children’s Burn Camp can be found on its website at http://brsg.org/wordpress/. The camp is always looking for counselors as well. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, please call the Burns Recovered Support Group Inc. at (866) 997-BURN (2876).
