City Accepts Donation of 99 Acres

map of potential trail system including new land donation

At the June 5th City Commission meeting the City accepted the donation of 99 acres of land from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). The land tract is located on the north side of Highway K-18, east of the Scenic Meadows Subdivision.  KDOT used the tract as a topsoil resource during the construction of K-18 and after an unsuccessful attempt to sell the land, it was offered to the City as a donation.

The City envisions using the site as a passive-use, natural area park that will link trails to the north and east, helping create a more robust trail system in the area.

Local residents voiced concerns regarding access to the park, maintenance costs, and future traffic from the area based upon use of the park which will be addressed during the planning process. Plans are currently being developed for maintenance of the weeds/grass in the park area and also intends to demolish several structures located on the site that are unsafe. City staff are excited to develop the potential of this property and provide it for the public good.
