MHK Flood Update 9/10/2018

(MANHATTAN, KS – September 10, 2018) Eighteen service agencies participated in the Multi Agency Resource Center (MARC) last Friday and were able to serve more than 100 families affected by last weekend's flash flood. According to Debra Tucker from the American Red Cross, it was the largest MARC event in recent Kansas history.

At the event, the Riley County Health Department distributed 47 Tetanus booster vaccinations along with 250 mosquito dunks to treat standing water, and more than 200 safety masks to help people during cleanup. The Knights of Columbus handed out $150 gift cards for groceries to each family, and Harvesters, HyVee, and Dillons provided food throughout the day.

Any flood victims who were unable to attend the MARC event are encouraged to schedule an appointment with the Red Cross by calling (785) 354-9244. By registering, victims ensure they will be contacted when relief is available. The emergency shelter located at Pottorf Hall closed on Saturday at noon and the remaining six residents were transported to hotels in Junction City. Flood victims who need shelter should contact the Red Cross using the number listed above.

To offer or request volunteer assistance, please contact the City Manager’s Office during regular business hours at (785) 587-2404. A list of volunteer organizations offering assistance is available upon request. Monetary donations can be made to the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation’s 2018 Manhattan Flood Relief Fund either online at or by texting the word “FLOOD” to (785) 284-8783. Donated funds will be given to area social service and non-profit agencies to assist flood victims in the area.

Some areas of Anneberg Park remain closed including: soft-surfaced trails, shelters and playgrounds, and some parking areas. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited. Linear Trail west of S. Manhattan Ave. also remains closed at this time.
