Apply now for the Citizens' Academy

Get to know your city from the Airport to the Zoo. The City of Manhattan is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 Citizens’ Academy class. Citizens’ Academy is a free, interactive program designed to introduce residents to city services, programs, and to the people who serve the City of Manhattan.

Citizens' Academy consists of six evening sessions. The sessions will be from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 9:00 p.m., with the exception of the first session, with a tour of the community starting at 5:30 p.m. Additional information for each session will be provided regarding the itinerary and meeting location. All participants in the Citizens’ Academy are highly encouraged to attend all of the sessions.

October 28, 2019

 

Community and Economic Development: Tour sites of interest in the City of Manhattan and learn about economic development initiatives. (Start at 5:30 p.m.)

Session 2

December 9, 2019

Governing the City: The role and relationship of the City Commission and city administration, advisory boards and committees, intergovernmental relations, overview of the finance department and function of the legal department.

Session 3

February 24, 2020

Manhattan Regional Airport and Fort Riley Relations: Tour of Manhattan Regional Airport and briefing on Fort Riley.

Session 4

March 23, 2020

Public Safety: Tour and overview of Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County Police Department.

Session 5            

April 20, 2020

Infrastructure and Public Works: Overview of public works and tour of Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment facilities.

Session 6 

June 8, 2020

Quality of Life and Parks & Recreation: Overview of Parks and Recreation Department, Flint Hills Discovery Center and tour of Sunset Zoo.


Applications are available at the Customer Service Counter, City Hall, 1101 Poyntz Ave., and online at www.cityofmhk.com/academy. Applications are due in the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on October 17, 2018, and will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited class size.
