The annual budget for the City of Manhattan is run on a calendar year (January 1 through December 31). Per state law, the annual budget for 2022 must be approved by the City Commission on or before October 1 of this year. In order to meet the statutory deadline, City staff begins developing its next year's budget request in winter and spring in order to present a proposed budget to the City Commission throughout the summer, aiming for a fall adoption.
Members of the City Manager's Office and Finance Department for the City led the first City Commission work session for the 2022 budget on Tuesday, May 25. The discussion provided an overview of the remaining budget calendar, fund balances, anticipated expenditure requests for operations and capital improvements, and updates on revenue forecasts. The next budget work session will take place on June 8, at 5:30 p.m. Department directors will be providing overviews 2022 operations, staffing, and capital requests. The meeting will be broadcast live on Facebook, cityofmhk.com/tv, and Cox Channel 3.
